#Our Spotlights

LOIS AROKOYO

Lois Arokoyo is a Design Project Manager with the Ministry of Highways. Her work lives at the intersection of engineering, gender equity, diplomacy, and global action. Beyond her professional role, Lois is deeply engaged in global advocacy. She previously served as Vice President of the United Nations Association, Regina Branch and is currently part of a cohort with the Organization for Economic Development and Diplomacy, continuing her commitment to policy, leadership, and international collaboration. Lois is also the founder of Girls, Be You!, a nonprofit born from her belief that girls deserve to see themselves reflected in STEM. Through her STEM Girls Drive initiative, she partners with professionals across STEM fields to deliver hands-on workshops for elementary and high school girls, opening doors, sparking curiosity, and reminding them that they absolutely belong in these spaces. She’s also a mentor and public speaker, as seen on National conferences, and various workshops where she speaks on STEM, youth leadership and gender equality.

Lois’ career journey is a perfect reflection of just how dynamic she is. She went on to study computer engineering after giving up on studying medicine but found out that programming and her simply didn’t click, so she pivoted to Environmental Systems Engineering. Amidst the challenges and difficulties that came with the course she stayed put and was awarded for her academic excellence along the way, which encouraged her to keep going. Proof that perseverance has receipts. After graduation, she found herself working at a Data company and eventually landed at the Ministry of Highways. Through every transition and every title, one thing remained constant: my commitment to volunteering. Because to her, there’s no point in building a career without building community alongside it.

Key lesson from Lois: “The boldest ones aren’t the best in the room, but the ones who choose, every day, to show up consistently”.

Advice to women or young people aspiring to build a career in STEM:

“You can do absolutely anything you put your mind to. Persistence, self-belief, and grit will take you where motivation falls short. You belong in every room you desire to be in, so don’t settle for safe when you were built for more”.
